For my short film I created my own soundscape as well as foley sound. The soundtrack was played by my friend to avoid any copyright issues of music. it also means i have exactly the right music at exactly the right time during my short film. We only used the piano to keep the sound track simplistic as I didn't want it to over power what was actually happening in the short film. To create the sound, we attached a cable to the piano and my laptop. Using garage band, the sound was transferred directly too the software. Below is a video showing behind the scenes: I showed a rough edit of my short film in the auditorium of my school so I could get valuable audience feedback. I showed a mixture of ages so I could get a wide audience demographic as well as my target audience. I thought it would be useful to see how all ages responded to my short film and helpful as I am still going through the editing process. As well as asking people in the audience what their thoughts were I handed out questionnaires for the audience to answer. I have posted the useful responses below, as some were all just 'yes' and 'no' answers. It is evident from my audience feedback that the twist needs to be more clear. To do this I will add more shots of my actor in the window in the final scene. The sound is also something that needs a lot of work on but as I am still in the editing process that is something I can change.Foley sound is recreating sounds in a studio after the film has been made. The best Foley art is so well integrated into a film that it goes unnoticed by the people watching. For my short film, I need Foley sound in order to replicate sounds that I wasn't able to catch at the time of filming. Also, some of the sounds in my film are perfectly useable however they aren't crisp enough. For example, when the front door banged, at the time there was a lot of movement so although the sound of the door was clear you could also hear background sound. What I need to record for my short film: 1) Banging on a door 2) Liam speaking 3) Tapping The video below shows the process of creating the sound, and the screenshot is of logic pro, the software used to put the sounds together. When I reshot the bath scene I tried to make the lighting less dark by changing the ISO settings on my camera. I also got more shots of Vi speaking which came out well. Here is a photo of me filming Vi without using a tripod or shoulder mount. I find that this gives me more flexibility.
On the day that I filmed the bath scene with Vi it didn't go as well as I had planned. This is because the footage came out very dark and didn't look well shot. Also, I didn't get Vi to say a pivotal part of the script which when I reshoot I will make sure she does. However despite this, filming the bath scene did give me some new ideas for different shots and gave me ideas on how to film it better next time. Not all of the footage came out bad, and I may use some of it when I edit it together with the new footage. When I re-film the bedroom scene I will make sure that you can see Vi's face more when she says the line 'night' as when I filmed her say it her face was covered slightly so her voice was muffled. In the balcony scene, I was originally going to have Vi's mother act as her mother. However I have changed my mind as I realised that if her father acted in my short film as oppose to her mother to express concern in the scene I could contrast that male character to Liam. It will hopefully show Vi (the protagonist) the good male figures in her life, in this case her father, compared to the damaged one (Liam). If her mother had acted it would not have created this contrast.
I will ask Vi's dad to dress smartly to create an even larger contrast to Liam's character. I am lucky in that Vi's dad is happy to act in my short film and is free on the day I had already arranged to shoot this scene. |
