Wes Anderson is an American film director who is known for quirky, comical movies with flawed characters, with projects ranging from 'The Royal Tenenbaums' and 'The Life Aquatic' to 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'.
His work also features a recurring ensemble of actors including, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.
I love his work not only because of his unique style, but because of the meticulously thought out shots and detail with in them. Anderson's love for symmetry is a clear feature of his work and is evident in the composition of most of his shots. Every scene in his films are executed so well, with usually bright and vivid bursts of colour making each shot eye catching and powerful- another specific style of Anderson.
In particular, I find his short film called 'Hotel Chevalier' particularly great. It is an American- French short film written and directed by Anderson. It is about a former lovers who reunite in a Paris hotel room. Interestingly, this short film is a prologue to his feature film 'The Drjeeling Limited'. It was shot on location in a Parisian hotel by a small crew, using props from Anderson's own apartment. It was self- financed by Anderson, who initially intended it to be a stand-alone film.
As I am planning on making my own short film later on this year, Anderson's style has really inspired me due to how specific it is. His shots tend to be long and slow-paced, nevertheless you remain hooked. I particularly like his use of tracking in this short film, as it is a technique that creates movement and energy, which is what makes this film so intriguing despite its slow pace. What I also like is how he doesn't give much away, making the audience wonder about the characters history. His use of music in this short film is also vital for the overall atmosphere which shows how important soundtrack is.
